Overgrowth
Phoebe Houser
Overgrowth is a collection of five short stories, each reflecting on the anxieties, habits, and metamorphoses shared between women. In “Doll Fingers,” a mother seeks answers for her daughter’s disturbing behavior on a Q&A page. In “Before the Flood,” a woman and her cousin wait for the apocalypse in an underground safehouse. And in “Overgrowth,” a group of young girls—all quite nearly human—develop a strange connection to a redberry bush. Exploring themes of religion, motherhood, and early friendships, Overgrowth questions whether there is any way to keep our fears, even the ones we try our hardest to conceal, from passing on.
